Sandburg Upward Bound Math-Science Accepting Applications Through April 20

Applications are being accepted through April 20 for students interested in participating in Carl Sandburg College’s new TRIO Upward Bound Math-Science program, which encourages students to pursue careers in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Students in the Abingdon-Avon, Galesburg, Knoxville, Monmouth-Roseville and ROWVA school districts who meet certain criteria are eligible to apply for this free, federally funded grant program that launched earlier this year and is now gearing up for its first full academic year. Sandburg’s UBMS program serves 60 area students annually.
The application is open to current eighth-graders as well as high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are a U.S. citizen/permanent resident, a potential first-generation college-bound student (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree) and/or meet federal income guidelines. Applications are available at each participating high school or online at www.sandburg.edu/ubms and are due by April 20.
The goal of UBMS is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, earn postsecondary degrees in those areas and pursue possible professions in STEM fields. During the five years of the grant cycle, Sandburg’s UBMS program must meet performance objectives in areas of academic performance, high school retention and graduation, as well as college enrollment and completion.
“This is not a temporary commitment, but an established partnership with our students so we can share in their challenges and successes,” Sandburg UBMS director Stephanie Woodard said. “The students’ dreams will become our goals, and we hope to provide the participants in the program with the necessary resources to make them a reality.”
The program stems from a five-year grant worth more than $1.3 million ($263,938 annually) that Sandburg was awarded last fall. Sandburg was one of just five institutions in Illinois — and the only Illinois community college — to receive a UBMS grant.
